What Is Polygon? The Ethereum Layer-2 Network

Polygon is a Layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum that enables faster, cheaper transactions while inheriting Ethereum's security and network effects. Originally known as Matic Network, Polygon has grown into one of the most-used blockchain platforms in the world, processing over 1.4 billion transactions in 2025 alone.

History of Polygon

Polygon was founded in October 2017 by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, and Anurag Arjun — all experienced Ethereum contributors. Initially launched as Matic Network, the project rebranded to Polygon in February 2021 to reflect its broader vision as an Ethereum-compatible multi-chain platform. In September 2024, the MATIC token was upgraded to POL as part of Polygon 2.0.

How Polygon Works

Polygon operates as a sidechain running parallel to Ethereum's main chain. It uses a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism with validators securing the network. Transactions processed on Polygon are periodically checkpointed to Ethereum mainnet, providing a security anchor. This architecture allows Polygon to achieve block times under 2 seconds and fees of fractions of a cent.

Polygon 2.0 and the POL Upgrade

In September 2024, Polygon completed the migration from MATIC to POL as part of the Polygon 2.0 upgrade. POL is designed to power a network of zero-knowledge (ZK) Layer-2 chains through the AggLayer — a unified cross-chain liquidity protocol. This upgrade positions Polygon as a foundational layer for the next generation of blockchain infrastructure.

POL Token Utility

The POL token serves multiple functions within the Polygon ecosystem: paying transaction fees on the Polygon PoS chain, staking to become a validator or delegator, participating in governance votes, and earning rewards from the AggLayer ecosystem airdrops. POL can also become eligible for rewards by providing liquidity in Polygon-based DeFi protocols.

Polygon Ecosystem

Polygon hosts thousands of decentralized applications (DApps) across DeFi, NFTs, gaming, and payments. Notable partners and projects include Aave, Uniswap, OpenSea, Decentraland, and The Sandbox. Major corporations such as Disney, Adidas, Starbucks, and Instagram have launched blockchain initiatives on Polygon, reflecting institutional confidence in the network.

Polygon vs. Other Layer-2 Solutions

Compared to other Ethereum L2 networks such as Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base, Polygon offers longer battle-tested track record, lower fees on its PoS chain, and a broader enterprise partnership network. However, newer ZK-rollup competitors offer stronger security guarantees. Polygon is addressing this with its zkEVM, launched in 2023.
